WHAT CAPACILESS IS
Capaciless is a public program targeted to women,
and it basically consists of public meetings and
workshops every other week, featuring
information about sexual health, STD's
prevention, and education about cancer and
gender-based violence issues.
DESCRIPTION
Women suffer from gender-based violence, as we
all know from one gender to another -male to
female. However, there is another kind of gender-based
violence within the homosexual community, where
lesbian women do suffer a double violence
situation due to their sexual preference.
Since there are no specialized agencies for the
homosexual community, and very few public health
programs are currently devoted to provide
specialized information to the gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgendered community, as well as
the lack of available public brochures and
information on sexual health and STD's
prevention, there is a void in healthcare and a
feeling of neglect depicted in specific
conditions where another kind of violence is
nested inside lesbian women's homes, and
coexists with their day to day reality, in a
quite fertile ground for a growing stigma with
their families and social circle. Through this
program, we can see the need of information and
education to key groups so the right kind of
information may be spread. This program does not
only focuses on gender-based violence but on
sexual and maternity health and prevention of
sexually-transmitted diseases, according to
specific needs in every targeted group. Once
new groups are born from this original effort,
dissemination will not be limited to Lesbian
Women Care, but to the heterosexual community as
well, providing information on female condom
use, several types of cancer, gender-based
violence and other women-related issues.
Diversiless is an approved, winner program at
the Social Development Council from the State of
Nuevo Leon, México.
HOW IT IS DONE
Within a 10-week period, the basic platform is
applied with two workshops a month, covering
specific issues for small groups for a better
facilitation and understanding. The effort
includes a workbook containing some tasks for
participants, such as sharing information and
experience. Last month, there is a public
information rally organized and held by the
workshop's attendees, where they apply all the
information previously provided, and distribute
brochures and female condoms with information on
how to use properly, and general sexual health
issues.
The initial amount of direct recipients might
look small, though the final number, once this
program is reproduced before other social groups,
should reach around 40,000 just in the state. |
